CINCINNATI FLYING PIG MARATHON ADDS FIVE MILE COMPETITION
CINCINNATI, OH - The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon announced today it is adding the Flying Pig Five Mile to be run alongside the Marathon on Sunday, May 6, 2001. The Cincinnati Marathon has been pegged as the "everyday runner" marathon and this new event enables more people to personally take part in the running competition.
"The addition of the Five Mile event to the weekend of activities allows us to give the runners another option to be part of the whole Flying Pig Marathon experience," explained Rich Williams, race director. "This new run creates a more attractive weekend for everyone - marathoners, friends and families, children and now a shorter distance for anyone."
The Flying Pig Five Mile will be run on Sunday, May 6, 2001, starting at 6:45 a.m., 15 minutes after the marathon start. Five Mile runners will start on 7th Street, the same as the marathoners, then travel down Broadway through downtown Cincinnati, across the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge into Covington, Kentucky and the streets of Newport, Kentucky. Runners will head back into Cincinnati via the Taylor-Southgate Bridge, weave through downtown Cincinnati again and finish at Yeatman's Cove, the same finish line for the marathoners.
"With the exception of the two bridges, the course is flat and fast. The morning view each runner will experience when crossing the bridges and running alongside the Ohio River to the Finish Line should provide an exhilarating encounter for everyone," added Williams.
The Flying Pig Five Mile will be limited to the first 1500 entries. The top five male and top five female runners will receive awards. Entry forms are available at the Marathon office, or runners may apply on-line via the website at www.flyingpigmarathon.com or download an application from the website and mail it in. All individual registrations received before the 30th of April on-line or May 5th in person at the Health & Fitness Expo are $20.00/entry. If it's not sold out, race day applications will be accepted starting at 5:30 a.m. on George Street between 6th & 7th street near the start and will be $30.00/person. The Runners Club of Greater Cincinnati will be assisting the Marathon with coordination and staffing for this newly added event.
Each Five Mile participant will receive a T-shirt, race goodie bag, entry into the MIX 94.1 Victory Party, listing in the Results Book and receive a discount on the 3rd Annual Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon poster. Runners must be at least 12 years of age on May 6, 2001 to participate.
"With the popularity of short distances and the increasing interest of the Flying Pig Marathon, we anticipate a sell out of 1500 runners. This certainly adds to our numbers. Registration numbers for the Marathon are well ahead of last year's pace. Anticipating 7500 Marathoners, nearly 1000 Flying Piglet runners and 1500 Five Miler, we may be looking at nearly 10,000 running participants for the weekend and more than 3000 volunteers," noted Scott Maier, executive director.
The Cincinnati Flying Pig certainly tried to keep everyone guessing. Remember his clues:
- It's not an animal. It's not a person. It's the greatest thing for pigs around!
- It's similar to a hand.
- It's a fraction of the whole, a pint size version, almost a mini-me!
Surprised everyone didn't guess it from the start????
