Flying Pig Marathon Honored for Youth Programs

Iris Simpson Bush with Running USA AwardCincinnati (February 17, 2011) The Flying Pig Marathon powered by P&G was recognized for its programs to involve youth in the sport of running with the Youth Program of the Year award from Running USA, one of the nation’s leading running organizations dedicated to advancing the growth and success of the running industry in America.

The award was handed out February 15th at the organization’s Leadership Luncheon during the Running USA Industry Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

“We are honored to have such a prestigious award given to the Marathon by Running USA,” said Iris Simpson-Bush, executive director. “We have dedicated our events to growing the running community, and we feel we have done that through our Kids’ Marathon.”

“This is an award that reflects the dedication of scores of teachers, parents and youth group leaders,” said Robin Pendery, the organizer of the Kids’ Marathon. “Without their support, we never could have grown the program to the expected 3,000 participants this year.”

The Flying Pig Kids’ Marathon program is an incremental marathon that youngsters complete, a mile at a time, until they finish their marathon during Flying Pig Marathon weekend. During the program youngsters also earn points for eating well and reading books, through the program’s partnership with The Nutrition Council and the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County.
