CINCINNATI, OH - Excitement for the newly added five mile competition to the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon on May 6, 2001 has generated interest from pizza giant Papa John's. As the first ever sponsor of the event, Papa John's has committed to a one-year sponsorship of the Papa John's Flying Pig Five Mile, already half way to its limit of 1500 participants.

"We're extremely excited about our new partnership with a first class organization like Papa John's," noted Scott Maier, Executive Director, Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon. "It's a natural marketing fit for the pizzeria, as there is a Papa John's restaurant at the five mile start line on 7th Street between Elm and Race Streets in downtown Cincinnati. It's also a perfect opportunity to celebrate Papa John's 10 year anniversary."

Papa John's has 34 locations in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky and more than 2500 restaurants nationally. The restaurant owners and managers each work within their communities to support school programs, churches, and local charity events all year round.

"We're excited about our sponsorship of the Flying Pig Five Mile," said Mike Hutmier, head of the Cincinnati co-op for Papa John's. "This is an opportunity to pull all area Papa John's stores together in support of an exciting event that will benefit numerous local charities."

The Papa John's Flying Pig Five Mile will be run on Sunday, May 6, 2001, starting at 6:45 a.m., 15 minutes after the marathon start. Five mile runners will start on 7th Street, the same as the marathoners, then travel down Broadway through downtown Cincinnati, across the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge into

Covington, Kentucky and the streets of Newport, Kentucky. Runners will head back into Cincinnati via the Taylor-Southgate Bridge, weave through downtown Cincinnati again and finish at Yeatman's Cove, the same finish line for the marathoners.

"With the exception of the two bridges, the course is flat and fast. The morning view each runner will experience when crossing the bridges and running alongside the Ohio River to the Finish Line should provide an exhilarating encounter for everyone," added Rich Williams, marathon race director.

The Papa John's Flying Pig Five Mile is limited to the first 1500 entries. Registrations have already been received for over 700 participants. The top five male and top five female runners will receive awards, including Papa John's gift certificates. Entry forms are available at the Marathon office, or runners may apply on-line via the website at or download an application from the website and mail it in. All individual registrations received before the 30th of April on-line or May 5th in person at the Northwood University Health & Fitness Expo are $20.00/entry. If it's not sold out, race day applications will be accepted starting at 5:30 a.m. on George Street between 6th & 7th street near the start and will be $30.00/person. The Runners Club of Greater Cincinnati will be assisting the Marathon with coordination and staffing for this newly added event.

Each Five Mile participant will receive a T-shirt, race goodie bag, entry into the MIX 94.1 Victory Party, listing in the Results Book and receive a discount on the 3rd Annual Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon poster. Runners must be at least 12 years of age on May 6, 2001 to participate.
