FLYING PIG MARATHON SUPPORTS CINCINNATI PUBLIC SCHOOLS
CINCINNATI, OH - Cincinnati Public Schools will open their doors for the first day of school on Tuesday, August 29, 2000. To ensure high levels of attendance the first week of school, the Back to School - Ready to Learn campaign was launched in early August to collect much needed school supplies for children who otherwise would not have them. To help out with these efforts, the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon donated 500 backpacks to the program.
"The Greater Cincinnati area has been extremely supportive of the Flying Pig Marathon. We feel it's a privilege to help out in return when we can," commented Kelly Weissmann, Executive Director, Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon.
According to Eileen Houston-Stewart, Assistant Director of Public Affairs for the Cincinnati Public Schools, "The middle and high school students will love the Flying Pig Marathon back packs. They are sorely needed and appreciated."
In 1998, 3500 students in Cincinnati Public Schools missed the first week of school. In 1999, members of Cincinnati Parents for Public Schools asked what could be done to remedy the situation. As a result, the Back to School - Ready to Learn campaign was launched. The campaign, helping provide students with the necessary tools and parents with more information, was deemed a success when it was determined that attendance during the first week of school matched the number of students attending during the second week.
The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon, a non-profit organization, made its mark as the second largest first-time marathon in the country in 1999. The third running will be on Sunday, May 6, 2001.
