Flying Pig Marathon spices up 2006 race
with Race to the Finish and Expo-Tique
Registration for race weekend is up
by 20 percent from last year
Cincinnati, Ohio (February 9 , 2006) - Organizers of the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon announce new initiatives today for the 2006 race weekend, scheduled for May 5-7, 2006, with registration pacing some 20 percent over last year's figures.
The eighth annual Marathon will feature the new "Old Spice High Endurance Race to the Finish," with prizes awarded to the male and female full marathoners, overall and in age divisions, who cover the final mile of the Marathon in the fastest time. Also, the Health and Fitness Expo will be sponsored by National City, with the new "Expo-Tique," devoted to women's fitness and health.
"We are thrilled to have Old Spice High Endurance join the Marathon with this exciting final mile challenge," said Iris Simpson-Bush, executive director. "And to have National City step up its involvement to include the Expo along with its Half-Marathon sponsorship makes the Flying Pig Marathon experience a truly unique one."
Adding to the excitement of Marathon weekend is the new Road Hog Rally presented by Grand Victoria Casino, a motorcycle run that will cover much of the Flying Pig Marathon course on Saturday, May 6. In conjunction, Grand Victoria also is donating a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle that will be up for auction, with proceeds going to the Flying Pig Marathon charities.
Friday, May 5, will be designated "Wear Your Pig Nose to Work Day" with the money raised through pig nose sales going toward the Flying Pig Marathon charities. Pig noses will go on sale at designated retail sites in April.
So far this season registration for all divisions of the Flying Pig Marathon events is up nearly 20 percent over registration at the same time last year, with 46 states and three foreign countries represented. Registration for Saturday's signature event, the 10K, is up almost 500 percent, while relay registration has jumped more than 30 percent. Individual marathon registrations are up almost 50 percent, and registration for the half is nearly 35 percent higher than at this time last year.
Part of the increase could be attributed to Runner's World's January edition putting the "Pig" in such exclusive company as the Walt Disney World Marathon in Orlando, Boston Marathon, Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Diego and the ING New York City Marathon as the most fun for participants.
"The marathon adheres to the 'flying pig' theme down to almost every detail," says Runner's World, "with costumed runners, volunteers known as 'grunts,' 'squealing fans' lining the sidelines and an official race mascot greeting runners at the 'finish swine.'" The article continues, "a carnival-like postrace party awaits runners and their families with food, music, rides, games and face-painting."
"We are so thrilled to be listed with such long-time prestigious marathons as New York and Boston," said Iris Simpson-Bush, executive director of the Marathon. "In only our eighth year, to be honored by such an esteemed running publication as Runner's World, just shows the support that the Greater Cincinnati community gives to us each year."
The eighth annual Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon will be held Sunday, May 7 with the Flying Pig Marathon, Half Marathon presented by National City, the Ernst & Young 4-person relay and the Corporate Express Corporate Challenge Relay. Saturday, May 6 features the 10K, the 5K presented by girls!can and Flying Piglet Fun Run and Family Festival. Presenting sponsors are CoActive Marketing, Corporate Express, Ernst & Young, Old Spice High Endurance, Mercy Health Partners, National City and Paycor.
