FLYING PIG A 'MILLION DOLLAR MARATHON'

Record Charity Funds Follow Record Registration

Cincinnati, Ohio (June 15, 2004) - For the first time in the six year history of the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon, money raised through the marathon for local and area charities surpassed the million dollar mark. Preliminary totals from charities and organizations which used the Marathon as a fundraiser show that the 2004 Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon helped to raise $1,032,263, with several charities yet to report their totals. The record fundraising comes the same year that Marathon registration passed the 12,000 mark for the first time.

"This shows just what a community event the Flying Pig Marathon is," said Iris Simpson-Bush, executive director. "One of the missions of the Marathon is to raise money for charity, and it's gratifying that we were able to help raise so much for so many good causes."

The Leukemia-Lymphoma Society's Team in Training raised the most money through the Marathon, with $630,000 going to the charity. Other top fundraisers were Team Stepping Stones, $70,000, Team 7 Fighting ALS, $53,000 and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Kelly's Foundation for Kids, raising $40,000 each.

Groups and organizations use the Marathon as a fund raiser in various ways, including recruiting teams of runners to collect pledges, volunteering to work along the Marathon course, or operating a fluid stop.

For the second year in a row, local Cincinnati runners took the top two divisions of the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon on Sunday, May 2. Winning the men's division was 37-year old T.J. Lentz of Clifton, and in the women's division, 25-year old P.J. Ball of Clifton. Lentz' winning time was 2:38:07, and Ball's was 3:05:52. The Flying Pig Marathon drew a record field of 12,124 for the weekend activities.

The seventh annual Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon will be held Sunday, May 1. Weekend activities include the Kahn's Flying Piglet and Fun Run, featuring the Pampers Diaper Dash, 5K Fun Run presented by girls!CAN, Papa John's 10K, Ernst & Young 4-person relay, Outback 2-person relay, Corporate Express Corporate Challenge relay and full marathon.
