Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon Goes "Back to School"

Backpack Donations Help Over-the-Rhine Students

Cincinnati, Ohio (August 22, 2003) - The Cincinnati Pig Marathon and the Flying Pig Mascot will be distributing 500 Flying Pig Marathon backpacks at the Over-the-Rhine Back to School Fair this Saturday August 23 at 2 p.m. at Rothenberg Preparatory School, 241 E. Clifton Av., to help neighborhood youngsters get ready for the start of school.

The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon donated nearly 500 Marathon backpacks and duffel bags to students in the Over-the-Rhine area Saturday, August 23, at the OTR Back to School Fair. Helping with the event are, from left, Tammy Hoffert, program director of Memorial, Inc., which organized the fair, Pig 'mascot' Jackie Reau, Theresa Towns of Memorial, Inc., and Iris Simpson-Bush, executive director of the Marathon.

"One of the Flying Pig Marathon's main missions is to our community," says Iris Simpson-Bush, executive director of the Marathon. "Since the Marathon route now goes through the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, it only makes sense that we help out the families getting ready for a new school year."

"It's important to get kids started on the right foot," said Theresa Towns of Memorial, Inc., the organizers of the Back to School Fair. "In some case, parents cannot always afford the needed school supplies and clothing. With the economy, we need to do as much as possible to prepare youngsters for the school year."

Hundreds of Over-the-Rhine students and their parents received back-to-school backpacks and duffel bags from Pig 'mascot' Jackie Reau and the Flying Pig Marathon on Saturday, August 23 at Rothenburg Preparatory School as part of the OTR Back to School Fair.
The backpacks were used as Marathon runners' gifts at previous races. They will be handed out between 2 and 5 p.m., or while the supplies last.

The 6th annual Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon will be held Sunday, May 2, 2004, featuring the Marathon, Outback 2-person relay, Ernst & Young 4-person relay and the Papa John's 10K. Presenting sponsors are CoActive Marketing Group, Mercy Health Partners and Paycor.
