Many Celebrations Planned for the “Pig”

CINCINNATI (November 28, 2007) - Registration for the 10th running of the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon set for Sunday, May 4, 2008 has been open since August with nearly 1,000 registrants representing 42 states already signed up. A record turnout is expected for the 10th running of the Flying Pig Marathon, according to organizers.

“The Marathon could not be celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2008 without the support of Cincinnati USA,” said Iris Simpson-Bush, executive director of the race who has been involved as a board member or executive director since the inception of the race. “Our race has grown to one of the largest and most respected in the United States thanks to our tremendous running community, volunteers, sponsors and law enforcement officials.”

In conjunction with the Marathon’s 10th anniversary, the Road Runners Club of America, the prestigious national association of running clubs, running events and runners dedicated to promoting long distance running, has picked Cincinnati as the host of its 50th Anniversary Convention, scheduled for April 30-May 4. Some 400 leaders in the U.S. running community will participate in the convention and meetings.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary, the Flying Pig Marathon is asking past participants to vote for their top 10 favorite moments of the Marathon over the years. Voting is open now at, with results to be released after the first of the year.

Also new in 2008, the “Pig Out Pasta Party,” traditionally held the evening before the Marathon, will be held on Fountain Square, with special ceremonies honoring the 166 runners who have completed nine Flying Pig Marathons and are planning to run the 10th.

The Marathon will also add the new Business Courier CEO Challenge division in the Marathon’s 4-person relay to encourage local companies to create fitness challenges among their colleagues and leadership.

The 10th annual Flying Pig Marathon weekend will be Friday, May 2-Sunday, May 4, 2008, featuring the full marathon, Half Marathon presented by National City and Ernst & Young 4-Person Relay, Business Courier CEO Challenge, Toyota 10K, 5K and the Piglet presented by First Watch, The Enquirer and Children’s Hospital. Other events include the National City Expo and Expotique and Duke Energy Pasta “Pig Out” Dinner. Presenting sponsors are Duke Energy, National City, CoActive Marketing Group, Ernst and Young and Paycor.

The Flying Pig Marathon was named one of the top 10 “Most Fun Runs” by Runner’s World magazine, one of the best corporate brands by Fast Company and is listed in The Traveling Marathoner: A Complete Guide To Top U.S. Races and Sightseeing on the Run, by Elise Allen.
